CHAPTER SUMMARY:
This chapter focuses on the practical ways to advance human rights through engaging with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). How does one find relevant CSOs? Where does one start and what does one do? What is the role of an individual and what is the role of a team in a CSO?
CSOs play a crucial role in promoting and advocating for human rights issues at the local, the regional, the national, and the international levels. Their expertise on and their close work with marginalized individuals, communities, and populations make them key players in drawing attention to specific issues in contemporary society. They cover critical issues such as: raising awareness, starting complicated conversations, managing resources as well as relationships with personal contacts, directors, fundraising and financial planning, ethics and accountability, coalition building and program evaluation.
This chapter explores four personal stories of people who became human rights advocates, in CSOs; the different roles and responsibilities of CSOs; how individuals and organizations engage in activities to move human rights issues forward; and, how they are self-organizing to evolve in the face of changing contexts.
